After 48 weeks of construction, one of the world’s largest vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI) tanks has begun service at DRS Technologies' Power Technology Inc. (PTI) business unit in Fitchburg, Mass.
The vessel plays an integral role in PTI’s Main Propulsion Motor program for the U.S. Navy. Large electric motors for naval power generation are treated with the VPI process, a sort of “curing” method for critical electrical components that increases the life of insulation and improves resistance to moisture and chemicals. The process helps the Navy reduce motor failure substantially.
The tank, more than 19 feet in diameter and 17 feet deep, is recessed nine feet in the ground.
