ARLINGTON, VA, June11, 2013 -- DRS Technologies, a Finmeccanica Company, has received a top commendation for environmental excellence by the State of Ohio Environmental Protection Agency for exceeding state and federal ecological compliance regulations.
The agency awarded DRS Environmental Systems in Cincinnati its prestigious Environmental Excellence Silver Award, recognizing that the facility has an established system of environmental management integrated into core business functions and has developed aggressive performance goals, including a process to communicate the company's progress to the local community.
The goal of Ohio EPA’s Encouraging Environmental Excellence Program (E3) is to promote environmental stewardship and reduce the impact of business activities on the environment.
“The companies we are honoring today with silver level awards are exemplary environmental stewards,” Ohio EPA Director Scott Nally said. “The commitment they are making to improve Ohio’s environment should be an example to other businesses in our state.”
DRS Environmental Systems achieved this award by instituting a number of key initiatives, including the recycling of large chemical containers, the increased utilization of insulation material on its products, and the reduction of water consumption by 72,000 gallons per year by recycling waste water and using rainwater for back-up water systems, among other policies.
“This award represents what people can do when they care and get involved,” said Gil Evangelist, DRS Environmental Systems vice president of operations. “Continuous improvement is in everything we do and knowing that we have no limits is what drives us to accomplish awards like the E3,” Evangelist continued.
DRS Environmental Systems was one of six facilities in Ohio to receive the E3 Silver Award along with Honda, Frito Lay, General Motors, Marathon Petroleum and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. This was the first time the DRS facility applied for the E3 Award.
Being honored with the award is the result of a demanding process. After submitting a proposal, a company or agency is then scored on its program using 15 environmental stewardship criteria developed by the Ohio EPA. Those organizations with the highest scores maybe asked for a site visit by the Ohio EPA to evaluate the environmental program and gather additional information to determine who will receive an award.
