Residing in an environmentally controlled laboratory at the DRS Land Electronics site in Huntsville, Alabama, this congressionally funded project was created to simulate Abrams Tanks of the future. However, the laboratory also possesses the capability to support numerous research and development projects concerning electronics on the entire M1A1 family.

With the ability to rapidly change the M1A1 Thermal Imaging System into the M1A1 Block 1 Second Generation Forward Looking Infrared Thermal system in less than 2 hours, SIL hopes to easily integrate these functionalities into future variants.

Variant candidates include the M1A1 Situation Awareness (SA) tank, the USMC M1A1 Firepower Enhancement Program (FEP) tank, the Assault Breacher Vehicle (ABV), the Joint Assault Bridger (JAB), as well as any other vehicle configuration utilizing the M1A1 platform.
