ARLINGTON, VA, March 26, 2012 -- DRS Technologies, Inc. a Finmeccanica Company announced today that students from 13 universities have been invited to develop entries for the 2012 Student Infrared Imaging Competition, sponsored by DRS’ Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition (RSTA) Group.
RSTA has donated two of its tiny Tamarisk™320 thermal imaging cameras to each participating university, and students will compete to develop the most creative way to use the camera in their senior projects or other academic endeavors. The best entry from each school will receive $1,000 from RSTA and become eligible for a $10,000 grand prize.
The qualifying universities were chosen by DRS based on a variety of factors to include their leadership in the field of imaging technology. Students pursuing any field of study at those institutions—including physics, engineering, biology, robotics, computer science and electro-optics— are welcome to enter the competition.
The participating universities are: Boston University, Florida Institute of Technology, Johns Hopkins University, Norwich University, Ohio University, Oklahoma State University, Penn State University, UCLA, University of Memphis, University of Michigan, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Texas at Arlington, and University of Texas at Dallas.
RSTA anticipates students will devise ways to incorporate the camera into projects that focus on image fusion, augmented reality, robotic vision, machine vision and other commercial applications. Students must comply with the rules of the contest and submit their project report with a cover letter to DRS Technologies before May 31, 2012.
“We are the world’s leading supplier of uncooled focal plane arrays, which are the major component of thermal imaging cameras like our tiny Tamarisk™320,” said RSTA President Terry Murphy, who developed the idea of this competition.
“We wanted to give students and faculty the opportunity to explore thermal, infrared imaging in real-world applications. We’re hoping they show us something we haven’t seen.”
A panel of DRS senior leadership and outside experts in the field of infrared technology will select the grand prize winner from the winning entries chosen from each university. All winners will be honored at an awards ceremony to be held in June in Dallas, Texas.
