Seeker Head Overview
Leonardo DRS is advancing a new space-based interceptor seeker head to support evolving customer requirements for the ability to deploy capability at speed and affordability.
Developed within our Electro-Optical & Infrared Systems portfolio, this capability is designed to deliver a practical, scalable path to future interceptor architectures by combining mission-focused performance with disciplined cost and production considerations leveraging our current high-rate production capabilities for Optical and Infrared mission systems.
Built around a design-to-cost (DTC) approach and leveraging commercial off-the-shelf building blocks, the solution is intended to reduce complexity, accelerate development, and support a more producible seeker architecture. With a hot production line already in place for key subsystems, Leonardo DRS offers customers and integration partners a strong foundation for transition, scale, and supply continuity.
- Designed for exo-atmospheric, with potential endo-atmospheric, interceptor applications
- Supports affordability through a design-to-cost development approach
- Reduces complexity through a simplified seeker architecture
- Leverages COTS building blocks to accelerate maturity and lower risk
- Backed by existing production capability for key subsystems
- Supports scalable integration into future interceptor concepts
- Developed by Leonardo DRS electro-optical and infrared experts
Leonardo DRS understands the priorities shaping next-generation missile defense programs. For U.S. Government stakeholders, that means solutions that are not only technically credible, but also affordable, producible, and scalable. For major missile primes, it means technologies that can integrate more efficiently, reduce execution risk, and strengthen long-term program competitiveness.
This seeker head capability is aligned to those priorities—bringing together advanced EO/IR expertise, disciplined engineering, and a production-ready foundation to help support the next wave of interceptor development.
In a highly competitive market, Leonardo DRS offers a differentiated approach rooted in practical innovation:
- Affordability is a core program driver
- A simpler, more responsive and producible seeker architecture
- Existing production readiness and demonstrated capabilities
- World Class technical EO/IR sensing expertise
- A focus on execution, scale, and mission relevance
Mission-Driven Innovation for Future Interceptor Architectures
As missile defense requirements continue to evolve, customers need solutions that balance performance with affordability and production readiness. Leonardo DRS is developing this seeker head capability to meet that need.
Designed for exo-atmospheric applications, the seeker reflects a focused engineering approach that prioritizes system simplicity, integration practicality, and cost discipline from the outset. The result is a capability positioned to support both U.S. Government stakeholders and major missile prime contractors seeking credible, scalable technology for next-generation interceptor missions.
Why Leonardo DRS
As missile defense requirements continue to evolve, customers need solutions that balance performance with affordability and production readiness. Leonardo DRS is developing this seeker head capability to meet that need.
Designed for Affordability
Affordability is built into the development approach from the beginning. Leonardo DRS is applying a disciplined design-to-cost strategy to help customers pursue advanced interceptor capability with greater cost realism and program flexibility.
Engineered for Simplicity
The seeker architecture is designed to reduce unnecessary complexity and support more practical system integration. This streamlined approach can help lower program risk while enabling a more manufacturable solution.
Built on Proven Foundations
By leveraging COTS-based building blocks where they make sense, Leonardo DRS is able to accelerate maturation, reduce development risk, and focus investment where it matters most to mission performance.
Ready for Production
Production readiness is a key differentiator. Leonardo DRS already has a hot production line for key subsystems, helping position this capability for efficient transition from development to deployment and future scaling.
