Leonardo DRS’ family of cooled infrared systems is built on decades of proven performance, reliability, and industry firsts.

Manufactured in Dallas, Texas, this product line is fully vertically integrated.

Leonardo DRS grows its own detector material from elemental Mercury, Cadmium, and Tellurium (HgCdTe or MCT) in our Dallas foundry. Once the focal plane array (FPA) material is grown and processed, it is epoxy mounted on Read-Out Integrated Circuits (ROIC); the FPA pixel processing occurs, and it is then radiometrically tested while in wafer form, after which the wafers are then sawn into individual FPAs and undergo additional testing.

Leonardo DRS also manufactures its own Dewars, coolers, and electronics.

By controlling every step of the manufacturing process, Leonardo DRS continues to relentlessly innovate; maintain impeccable quality controls; and ultimately, deliver the highest performing cooled camera cores in the industry.

Cooled Infrared Products

HexaBlu® revolutionized HD mid-wave infrared (MWIR) sensing with its 6µm pixel pitch HgCdTe detector and industry-leading SWaP.

Decades of proven performance, industry-leading reliability, and formally qualified to US Government standards.

HgCdTe Linear-Mode Avalanche Photodiode Capabilities

Leonardo DRS has made significant advancements in the development of HgCdTe linear-mode, electron-initiated avalanche photodiodes (APDs).

These APDs demonstrate single-photon sensitivity from the visible to MWIR range and have enabled new NASA space light detection and ranging (LiDAR) applications. Detector performance has been enhanced with a revised light-barrier design that has successfully reduced dark counts due to “ROIC glow” by nearly a factor of 4, with excess noise factors well below the McIntyre limit. Gain measurements achieved record levels of ~6100, setting a new benchmark for MWIR.
