Next Generation of Power Conversion for Naval Platforms

A complete series of low voltage power electronic modules.

Power Electronic Module (PEM) for naval platforms (front view)

Leonardo DRS’ power electronic modules, or PEMs, offer a significant increase in power density and decrease in cost over previous generations.

From power distribution and electrical control products to ship control automation, Leonardo DRS offers advanced product development, world-class manufacturing, and global engineering services and support.

Liquid-Cooled SiC Power Electronic Modules are the Latest in Solid-State Power Conversion Technology

The Leonardo DRS series of liquid-cooled Power Electronic Modules (PEMs) advances solid-state conversion technology for improved power density, flexibility and maintainability. Since the development of our first baseline PEM in 2005 we have worked continually to improve capability while meeting stringent power quality and acoustic requirements.

The Leonardo DRS 3-phase 4th Generation PEM at 300kW, offers 60% greater power density over the 3rd generation design while enabling system level volume, weight, and cost reduction via ten times greater switching frequency operation.  Its development is based on our extensive experience in naval power conversion systems for DC/AC and DC/DC converter applications and the implementation of latest technology Silicon Carbide Power Electronics.

Integrating PEMs as a system provides advantage for system stability, fault handling, and redundant control. Potential applications for Leonardo DRS PEM power conversion technology include VFD’s, soft starters, frequency converters, point of use power conversion (AC/DC, DC/AC, DC/DC, AC/AC), propulsion drives or power conversion based power systems.
