At Leonardo DRS, we have a team dedicated to the design and manufacture of high reliability MIL-SPEC power conversion and Naval UPS for critical military applications. We leverage more than four decades of experience and focus on power conversion to offer power supplies that provide the necessary performance and reliability to support mission-critical systems. We have fielded over 30,000 units including installations in over 250 ships throughout Canada, the United States and other fleets worldwide.
Our power conversion products are qualified to the same rigorous standards as the systems they support, either by test or by extension. Product reliability is ensured throughout our ISO 9001 processes, including design, in-house production and confidence testing, manufacturing by IPC Class III trained assemblers, and after sales support.
In addition to standard military power supplies, we specialize in providing the optimal solution for challenging requirements including backfit, forward fit, and new design. Our customers turn to us to solve their most challenging issues, either with problematic in-service systems or for new applications. Whether the solution involves off the shelf product or custom designed form/fit/function replacements, our Engineering Team has the capabilities and tools to meet your needs for reliability, performance, and cost.
Leonardo DRS provides a complete range of Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) and In-Service Support (ISS) throughout the life cycle of our products. This includes training, technical support, field service, repair and overhaul, engineering and configuration management and proactive component obsolescence management. We do what it takes to support our equipment and ensure that it operates reliably throughout its service life.
Power conversion is a critical element in any system; our product line of Pivotal Power Solutions provides proven technology for years of reliable service.
Leonardo DRS is proud to introduce the next generation UPS in our line of Pivotal Power Solutions. The 6kVA AC UPS provides conditioned backup power to command, control, and communication equipment where a clean, reliable power supply is essential.
The new 6kVA is smaller and lighter than the existing UPS units while providing significant improvements in power. It is fully MIL-spec and stand-alone qualified to the Navy’s gold standard for UPS equipment (MIL-DTL-24765B), which includes shock, electro-magnetic interference, and vibration meaning it can be mounted directly to the ship.
Leonardo DRS' power conversion equipment provides dedicated power to mission-critical combat and platform systems. Available in rackmount and console mount configurations. Our equipment is designed and tested to meet or exceed these requirements, ensuring reliable performance for the long haul.
Leonardo DRS' Naval 115VAC power conversion equipment complies with the following MIL-SPEC requirements:
Our 440VAC power conversion supplies are the backbone of both platform and mission systems throughout the surface fleet. Our 440VAC power conversion equipment supports both individual and groups of platform and combat systems with proven reliability. Our products are available in bulkhead, deck, or rack mount configurations. A key feature of this equipment is the ability to meet shock and vibration standards without the need for special mounting provisions - giving it the flexibility to be installed where needed to support critical systems.
Leonardo DRS’ Naval 440VAC power conversion equipment complies with the following MIL-SPEC requirements:
Leonardo DRS has leveraged its experience in 440VAC power conversion to develop the next step forward in Naval UPS reliability and availability. Our Zonal UPS features N+1 redundant hot-swappable 2kVA power and battery modules, as well as manual and automatic bypass - ensuring continuous uninterrupted operation of the load. Nominally rated at 8kVA, 450VAC, 60Hz, 3 phase input / output, the capacity of the Zonal UPS has the potential to be increased or decreased in 2kVA increments.
Not only does the Zonal UPS raise the bar in terms of reliability and availability, but its modular design can also greatly simplify the logistics burden of supporting multiple UPS manufacturers and models throughout the platform. By employing common power and battery modules, training and sparing requirements can be significantly reduced. The Zonal UPS also includes battery health monitoring, which reduces the need to pre-emptively replace batteries prior to the end of their useful life.
Leonardo DRS’ Zonal UPS complies with the following MIL-SPEC requirements:
Leonardo DRS's 1500W DC/DC power conditioner is designed to operate from the vehicle’s 28VDC bus to provide clean and stable 28VDC output power to downstream equipment. In particular, the DC/DC power conditioner is designed to isolate the connected equipment from transients, spikes and surges as established in MIL-STD-1275D.
The DC/DC power conditioner currently provides a current limited power output of approximately 1500W. The converter has a factory adjustable input current limit that can be increased to allow up to 1750W of output power. The power conditioner also acts as a UPS, using super capacitors to provide a minimum of 20 seconds of holdup at 1140W. The super capacitors used have a maintenance-free lifespan of 10 years, minimizing the ILS support and maintenance typically required with lead acid batteries.
Leonardo DRS’ Helicopter Starter is specifically designed to support aircraft operations aboard combat ships. Operating using 440VAC, 60Hz, 3-phase power, the Helicopter Starter provides starting currents of up to 1000A at 28VDC nominal. It is also capable of serving as a continuous duty rectifier, supplying 335A continuous. Intended for deck mounting, the unit meets relevant shock and vibration requirements including MIL-STD-167-1A and MIL-S-901D, Grade A.
