Delivering mission-critical communications across the globe requires a proven partner capable of securing your data and ensuring resiliency with a robust, “no-fail” information and communications technology (ICT) ecosystem. Leonardo DRS is the leading innovator in providing mission-critical solutions to complex communications requirements which include and are not limited to multi-domain information systems, cybersecurity operations, reliable backhaul terrestrial networks, and cutting-edge satellite networks for global telecommunications. Our commitment as an ICT integrator is to provide our customers with best value solutions that leverage three fundamental advantages: speed, scalability, and innovation.
The Leonardo DRS Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Ecosystem is the core offering that provides fully integrated, turn-key ICT solutions tailored to our customers current and future requirements so they can focus on their mission. Leonardo DRS engineers, manages, and supports the entire ICT Ecosystem to deliver reliable, resilient, and secure solutions.
By using a holistic and vendor-agnostic approach to integrating the ICT Ecosystem, Leonardo DRS offers its customers the fundamental advantage of a trusted RMF authorized infrastructure to ensure mission success and the safety of our customer's data. The Leonardo DRS ICT Ecosystem is built upon three main segments, the space segment, the ground segment, and the network management segment. The space segment includes resilient global SATCOM coverage using LEO, MEO and GEO satellite services. The ground segment includes geographically diverse teleports, a highly available MPLS terrestrial network with self-healing circuits, and a diverse range of user terminals and connections. The network management segment is comprised of a network operations layer which includes the Leonardo DRS Global Network Operations Security Center (GNOSC), a Continuity of Operations Site, an information technology layer providing managed network services and comprehensive enterprise IT support, and a cyber services layer that spans all ICT segments providing the protection required by government and military customers so they can perform their missions confidently with strong security built into their telecommunication networks.
Another key feature of the ICT Ecosystem offered by Leonardo DRS is a customer portal. The Leonardo DRS ICT Portal is a web based NetOps capability that provides a consolidated and transparent view of key information within a managed end-to-end ICT ecosystem so the customer can see in near real-time how the network is performing. The ICT Portal places precise performance metrics and actionable data in the hands of key decision-makers through monitoring and reporting capabilities of hybrid, complex networks consisting of disparate systems, siloed software, multiple nodes, and various types of equipment.

Satellites are the key component in all global networks and at the top level of the Leonardo DRS Ecosystem are all the commercial satellite communication or COMSATCOM services currently on the market today. As the #1 COMSATCOM integrator for the U.S. Federal Government and the Department of Defense (DoD), Leonardo DRS has longstanding relationships and formal agreements with all major operators to provide the full gamut of COMSATCOM services. These multi-orbit (GEO, MEO, and LEO) and multi-band services include L, Ka/HTS, Ku, C, and X-Band; we can also provide customers with UHF for tactical mobile communications and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) for earth observation.
As an operator agnostic integrator and a top supplier of satellite bandwidth to the U.S. Government, Leonardo DRS uses its industry position and knowledge to get the right service for each requirement at the right price, regardless of vendor. In short, we provide best value satellite-based ICT solutions.
Below the satellite fleets is the Leonardo DRS ground segment or terrestrial network that connects the layer of multi-band, multi-orbit satellites with earth stations or teleports and ultimately our customers. Leonardo DRS refers to its terrestrial network as the Global Communications Network or GCN. The GCN is the core capability of the Leonardo DRS ICT Ecosystem that is used to deliver secure and reliable voice, video, and data services on demand, anywhere at any time. The Leonardo DRS GCN is a private carrier-grade, low-latency, low-jitter, and highly available MPLS network. It is engineered with strategically positioned teleports to maximize global coverage by providing 100% diverse and redundant access to the entire commercial and military satellite arc. The GCN is also made up of redundant, self-healing fiber circuits that connect core nodes with data centers, cloud services, the Internet, and customer networks around the world.
Reinforcing our commitment to high security and availability, Leonardo DRS achieved and currently maintains a Risk Management Framework (RMF) Government-issued authority to operate (ATO) for the Leonardo DRS GCN at the Moderate-Moderate-High (M-M-H) confidence level for confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
It is important to note the 3 integrator advantages, as it applies to the terrestrial part of the Leonardo DRS ICT Ecosystem – these advantages are:
Another important part of any ICT Ecosystem is access for customers -- represented here by the various forms of user interface devices – satellite terminals, fiber or cable connections, and mobile device connections. As a vendor agnostic integrator, Leonardo DRS adds resiliency to this layer because they can connect customers or users with almost any technology. Integrators connect customers on land, air, and sea; integrators connect both fixed or static sites and mobile users; and large integrators, like Leonardo DRS with a fully developed Ecosystem, can support any mission set from telemedicine, to Command and Control, to Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR).
One of the key benefits of being a vendor agnostic integrator is not being limited to any one type of equipment or solution, which adds resiliency to the ICT Ecosystem. Unless the equipment developer or satellite fleet owner themselves have proprietary restrictions on usage, Leonardo DRS can adapt their network to any end-user equipment. This includes legacy equipment – which is often a requirement for specialized mission sets. It also includes leading-edge and prototype equipment – helping customers reach the next level of technical capability to support their missions.
Leonardo DRS also provides user equipment services that includes field service support, repair and return, on-demand spares, fielding upgrades, and testing and evaluation of new equipment.
Leonardo DRS Network Operations provide multiple disciplines of engineering and technical support that are necessary for the entire ICT ecosystem to effectively work and deliver high levels of network confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Technology refresh is the discipline that allows the ecosystem to constantly evolve with state-of-the-art services that increase quality, capacity, and speed. Networking Tools are used to ensure quality of service is optimized and service level requirements are met for managed network applications and end-user service. Capacity Planning and Management allocates, utilizes, and optimizes available bandwidth for current customer missions. This team, along with HNA and Licenses, evaluates, plans, procures, and commissions bandwidth for surge and new requirements. At the center is the Leonardo DRS Global Network Operations and Security Center or GNOSC which provides persistent network monitoring and control, and a streamlined trouble ticket system for helpdesk services.
More key network operation components for providing reliable, resilient, and secure solutions include Logistics and Deployment support, Field Services, and Terminal Activation. Logistics and Deployment is responsible for ensuring equipment and people are where they need to be, at the right time. Field Services installs and configures equipment anywhere in the world, they also leverage Terminal Activation to deploy and connect remote devices to the Leonardo DRS GCN, and they work closely with customers to ensure end-user network access meet all requirements.
As part of managing global networks, integrators are skilled at managing the information technology (IT) services and applications that serve the customers. This layer depicts the IT services that Leonardo DRS manages and supports on behalf of the customer. At the top of the IT layer are network applications and services that are used to provide customers with comprehensive voice, video, and data capabilities. Below this are the IT support services. Although the Help Desk runs out of our GNOSC, it is categorized in the IT layer and offers 24x7x365 support for the full range of Information and Communications Technology needs.
Leonardo DRS Help Desk capabilities include:
For complete ICT integration, Leonardo DRS extends its expertise by supporting the customer’s onsite network operations, security operations, and data centers. We also serve as a complete IT Service Management provider, offering services like:
Cybersecurity is integrated into all aspects of the integrator’s ecosystem. It is important to note that Leonardo DRS can bring the same level of security provided on government networks – and commercial networks can be assessed and authorized to operate to those government standards. For example, Leonardo DRS applies a cyber-security framework and methodology across the network, that is assessed and authorized to the Risk Management Framework (RMF) security standards as established by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the U.S. Federal Government and the Department of Defense (DoD).
The Leonardo DRS network solution is currently operating under a Government-issued Authority to Operate or ATO and Authority to Connect or ATC in full compliance with the RMF Moderate-Moderate-High security categorization for confidentiality, integrity, and availability. As part of managing this network, Leonardo DRS performs all systems administration, including engineering and installing new requirements, and performs all network data backups on firewalls, email servers, and domain name servers or DNS. It is important that integrators embrace the RMF standards and processes — including the security triad of confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
Leonardo DRS embraces RMF, and as part of this we offer customers:
In short, Leonardo DRS can provide the security required by government and military customers so they can perform their missions confidently with strong security build into their communications networks.
The Leonardo DRS ICT Portal is a web-based NetOps capability that provides a consolidated and transparent view of key information within a managed end-to-end ICT ecosystem so the customer can see in near real-time how their network is performing.
