Modeling and Simulation

Proving Naval Power and Propulsion Systems Before Steel is Cut

Naval Systems Modeling and Simulation Overview

Our validated, physics-based models design, test, and prove complete power and propulsion systems in the digital domain.

Leonardo DRS proves complete naval power and propulsion systems in the digital domain before hardware is built. Validated, physics-based models predict how a system will behave, shape ship specifications early, and generate the control software that ultimately runs the fielded equipment. The result: fewer surprises during integration, and equipment that arrives pierside already proven.

Rather than waiting for hardware to find out how a system behaves, we predict system behavior, identify issues, and establish interfaces early, before we build the hardware. The same models generate the control software that runs the fielded system.

Physics-Based Modeling

Design and Test Before Hardware Exists

Accurate models of the major components: motors, drives, energy storage, engines, generators, and controls are verified and validated against known performance data and reused across programs. They analyze conceptual designs and system architecture to inform ship specifications for power distribution, propulsion, machinery control, and complete integrated power systems.

Hardware-in-the-Loop

Real Controllers. Real-Time Simulation.

The same validated models generate the actual control software code, which we target to real controller hardware and test against a real-time simulation of the equipment. Integration issues are caught early, when they are cheapest to fix, and the models remain available for trouble shooting and validating updates over the long life of the equipment.

Digital to Delivered

Proven on Next-Generation Programs

Leonardo DRS modeling and simulation is helping advance the U.S. Navy’s understanding of optimal system architectures for next-generation electric drive propulsion, characterizing integrated power and propulsion behavior across a broad spectrum of shipboard operating conditions and contingencies.
